The Year of the Widow / Veronika Lišková / Czech Republic, 2024 / 109 min. - Due to a tragic event, interpreter Petra (Pavla Beretová) must come to terms with the fact that she has become a widow at the age of 40. She soon discovers that grief is not the only challenge she has to face. Added to this is the concern for her teenage daughter (Julie Šoulcová) and the pressure from her manipulative mother-in-law (Zuzana Kronerová). And then there's the whole bureaucratic machinery that comes alive with a person's death: mortgages, loans, rents, fees, endless inheritance proceedings. Among the wreckage of her life, however, Petra step by step finds the courage to make a new start... The Widow's Year tells a story of courage, hope and the strength to start again after the death of a life partner. The screenplay is loosely based on Zuzana Pokorná's diaries, which were continued and published by the weekly Respekt.
