Egon Schiele Art Centrum

When you're looking for a place to rest or a shelter from the rain, you shouldn't miss visiting Egon Schiele Art Centre. It all started in 1992, after the fall of the Iron Curtain between Eastern and Western Europe, the initiative of three people created the Egon Schiele Art Centre. The idea was to create an international cultural center in one of the most beautiful renaissance cities in Europe.

Visit a museum that used to be a brewery

One of the surprising facts is that the ancient complex of buildings is a former municipal brewery from the 16th century. Though the buildings were destroyed, they managed to partially get it repaired in a record time of only 11 months. The first Egon Schiele exhibition took place there in November 1993.

Egon Schiele was a controversial Austrian expressionist painter whose work had an enormous influence on the development of modern art. He was born in 1890 in Tulln, Austria but his mother was from Český Krumlov.

Artworks influenced by Gustav Klimt

He studied art after the death of his father, who was his greatest inspiration. Though he hadn't finished his studies, he continued pursuing a career as an artist. Later on, his art was influenced by the death of his father and by Gustav Klimt.

When you visit the museum you’ll see things such as drawings, graphics, the artist's own furniture, personal letters, business cards, dozens of photographs, Schiele's family tree, documentation about his stays in Krumlov and the motifs on his works. On the grounds of the 4 000 m are seasonally changing exhibitions of 20th and 21st century art.

The museum is complemented by an extensive museum shop and a traditional café with Czech specialties for artists and art lovers appropriate to the atmosphere.
