Český Krumlov
Český Krumlov is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Europe with
a colourful history dating back to the 11th century.
Český Krumlov is a town in the South Bohemian Region in the Český Krumlov District, 22 km southwest of České Budějovice. It is situated below the ridge of the Blanský Forest and the Vltava River flows through it. It is a tourist and cultural centre of South Bohemia. It has approximately 12 thousand inhabitants.
In the past, Český Krumlov was the seat of many powerful Czech families, including the Vítkovs, the Lords of Krumlov and the Schwarzenbergs. It is called the Gateway of Šumava together with towns such as Sušice, Vimperk and Prachatice. At the turn of the 19th and 20th century it was perceived by famous poets as the capital of Sumava. The dominant feature of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the town's castle. A Renaissance palace with elaborate gardens and the romantic ruins of the fortress. An ideal place to relax while exploring the historic buildings, river promenade and wooded surroundings of this beautiful town.
The medieval town centre which surrounds the meanders of the Vltava River has been a municipal conservation area since 1963.
Český Krumlov has also become the setting for several films and during the year the town hosts a number of cultural events and festivals such as the Five-Leaved Rose Festival, IMF Český Krumlov, Rally Český Krumlov.
