Krumlov specialties

Today, Krumlov offers a wide variety of tasty treats. Start your day off with a cup of tea and some homemade biscuits and gingerbread made from a 16th-century recipe. Try a pint of dark smoked beer with locally made speck if you're in the mood for something salty.

Taste the Český Krumlov gingerbread

The Old Bohemian gingerbread is manufactured according to the ancient recipe from the 16th century. Made in a factory in the city neighborhood called ‘Latrán’. It's manually pressed into wooden molds made from fruit tree wood because this is the greatest material for them. The precise timing and temperature of baking affect the gingerbread's color shade. Krumlov gingerbread is made with premium South Bohemian honey, wheat, and spices.

Must try for the lovers of cheese

South Bohemia is home to Madeta, the largest milk processor in the entire Czech Republic. With more than a 100-year-long legacy, one of Madeta's specialties is a layered cheesecake. It's a melted cheese combined with South Bohemian Niva, ham, or nuts. You are all familiar with Niva, cheese with its blue-green noble mold. The first loaf of this cheese ripened in the rock galleries of Český Krumlov in 1951 and was named after the Šumava meadows. It's currently being aged in Madeta Český Krumlov's cutting-edge above-ground cellars.

Indulge yourself in a bacon speck

The best thing to eat with a pint of beer is something greasy and fatty like the ‘Krumlov speck’. As Sudeten peasants once did in the Krumlov region, it is currently dry-cured in the Czech Republic. The high-quality produced piece of pork belly has had the ribs removed, but the delicious, lean meat is still there. It’s salted without any marinating and, after the required maturity, smoked till golden. Of course, a light sprinkling of crushed juniper gives this specialty the aroma and taste we admire in products from the other side of the Šumava.

Cute biscuits as a gift from your trip

Every sweet appetite and traditional food enthusiast will like Krumlov biscuits. Delightful treats are made with cranberry pieces, raisins, and shelled almonds. Plus, the biscuits make a great addition to coffee or tea. Your family will be surprised with this lovely and handy box, which features the design of the renowned Castle Masquerade Hall. It makes it the ideal souvenir from your travels. Buy the biscuits at the Info Center Český Krumlov.

Taste a locally made caramel

Krumlov caramel from Vašek is an original gift from the Czech Republic as well as a distinctive locally produced product. Český Krumlov liquid caramels from Vašek have

specific taste and smell. They are made 100% by hand, without preservatives, starches or dyes. The caramel contains water, coffee, or herbal extract to make it liquid. Caramel is prepared in different flavor variations.

This soup is love or hate kinda thing

We love a tasty traditional Czech soup called ‘Kulajda’. It originates from southern Bohemia, consisting of cream, mushrooms, egg, potatoes, dill and other spices. It’s distinctive for its unusual blend of flavors and aromas, primarily driven on by the herb - dill. The soup usually includes a hard-boiled egg or, more frequently, a poached egg.

Drink smoked beer

The beer is called ‘Eggenberg Smokey dude’ and the brewery’s history dates back to 1560. It's a dark lager beer made from special smoked malt, which gives the beer an intense aroma and the smoky taste. It has an optimum bite, a strong coffee taste with a pleasant malt component and a sour aftertaste. This beer was developed many years ago by the Rosenberg, Eggenberg and Schwarzenberg families. Today, the brewery makes 7 different kinds of beer. It’s quality is showed by the title of Silver Beer of the Year 2010.
