Křížová hora (Mountain of the Cross)

You can't miss a majestic baroque pilgrimage complex rising above the city. It's a memorable spiritual, historical and cultural place where people come for a rest, knowledge and prayer. Located on the top of Křížová hora, it offers splendid views of Český Krumlov and Šumava.

Romance takes care of the place

The hill area became a pilgrimage site after the emergence of the chapel. It was built on the initiative of the people of Krumlov during the Eggenbergs' rule. In the 18th century, the site experienced the peak of Czech spiritual life. However, during the First World War, the entire area fell into considerable disrepair. The situation changed when Terezie Schwarzenberg decided to buy the place of worship in 1928. She repaired and renovated the building at her own expense. The place of prayer endured the socialist regimes and the Velvet Revolution and now it's been taken care of by a pair of enthusiasts – Dalibor Uhlíř and Věra Petrovičová. They first met each other on this very mountain and from that day on, the pair have been improving the area around and promoting the place among the tourists and pilgrims.

The story behind the chapel and the bell

The eight-nave chapel dates back to 1710. It's a prominent example of the Baroque style. The church was consecrated on the occasion of the "Exaltation of the Holy Cross" on September 14. From that day, the bell from the chapel's belfry rings, enlivening both the neighborhood of Křížová hora and the entire town with its sound. The chapel preserves local artworks from the beginning of the 18th century. The guests have a chance to visit a permanent exhibition of Madonnas of South Bohemia and discover the variegated interior of the church.

Křížová hora lookout tower

Once you've climbed the Křížová hora, it's worth seeing the lookout tower. It has a height of 735 m above sea level, and there are 130 steps on the way to the viewing platform, so you will have to make some effort to get up. As a reward, the twenty-five-meter tin tube guarantees magnificent views. Everyone agrees this place gives a feeling of spiritual fulfillment and calm. If you feel like taking a break from tourist crowds in the city, this is surely the place to go and enjoy peaceful nature.
